With the Fireflies

With the Fireflies

"Will you be here tomorrow?" he asked her with hope in his eyes.

"I will try," she replied smiling, noting his hopefulness and feeling the same way.

"I will wait for you all day, here by this pond."

"If I'm not here by the time the moon raises leave...I won't be here before the sun is high, so sleep late, my dear."

"I will wait from dawn until the end of time."

"You need not wait that long," she smiled.

"You are well worth an eternal wait," he smiled back

"I love you, soon we will be together. And soon I will tell my father of our love, even if he doesn't approve," she sighed.

"Damn my station!"

"Your station matters not to me, so it shouldn't to you. Your heart is what I love, not your place in society. I would rather be with we and cast out of my family, then not be with you at all."

"But without your father's support and approval, I couldn't possibly give you all the comforts you are used to."

"I don't care."

"I do..."

"I love you Dorian...I must go now."

"Go then, I shall wait for you from dawn until forever, Adriana."

"I will come as early as I can."

Adriana kissed him gently and walk through the forest back to her home, the castle. Dorian her disappear into the dark shadows of the forest. He decided that he would just sleep there that night, no one cared were he was anyway. He lay and stared up at the bright moon and the twinkling stars. He watch the fireflies and they danced around each other in the moon beams. He slowly drifted to sleep, all the while thinking of Adriana. He dreamt of them being married, with her father's approval and being happy forever. He slept with a smile on his face as he dreamt.

When Adriana arrived, Dorian was still asleep, she woke him up by nudging him softly. He woke up and slowing opened his eyes, he up his arm in front of him to block out the bright sun. He saw Adriana standing above him, smiling at him. Her soft gray eyes looked very distressed.

"What is wrong, my dear?" he asked still dazed by sleep.

"I told my father of us." ,she said and began sobbing, "He bid me come tell you the I must never see you again, and that if I do...he will have you hanged."

Dorian's daze went away quickly, he got up and held on to Adriana tight.

"We must find away....perhaps meeting another place... by the brook....far from all people."

"My father will surely have me followed," she kept on sobbing.

"Tell him you go to your grandmother's....and run away with me."

"Yes...Yes...I will run away with you!!" she said still partly sobbing.

"Meet me by the brook tomorrow, before dawn..and we shall flee this place and be together forever."

They held each other for a bit and kissed very softly. Adriana left for home to prepare to live that next morning, as did Dorian. Adriana didn't know that her father was already having her followed. His guards told him of their plan to flee and get married. Her father did not let on that he knew of her plans, he did not want her to warn Dorian, for he will surely hang for disobeying the King!

On the way to his house, Dorian was attacked by three guards they beat him until he was unconscious. They took him to the King. He just stared at Dorian with anger in his eyes.

"You will surely hang for making plans to steal my daughter, as much as it may hurt her, it will be for the best!"

"I love her...." is all Dorian had to say.

They took Dorian to the brook and hanged him there, surely then the Adriana would know. When Adriana came down the path, she saw her loves lifeless body hanging from the very tree where they craved: "Adriana + Dorian forever."

"Damn you father!" She cried out sobbing.

She took Dorian's dragger from his belt and cut his body down from the tree, she held him and sobbed on him for hours.

"I will be with you," she said as she took his dragger and drove it straight into her own heart. She bled to death with his lifeless body in her arms. The King was horrified to learn of his daughters suicide and in turn, he killed himself for the guilt and agony he felt. Dorian and Adriana were together, forever as they intended to be, and each night you can see their spirits dancing with the fireflies in the moon beams.
